SAC Women in Surety Breakfast Event & Fireside Chat

Women in Surety

~ Cette session sera présentée en anglais seulement. ~

Members of the Surety Association of Canada (SAC) are invited to attend our upcoming Women in Surety breakfast event, which will be held on Wednesday, September 21, 2022, from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. (EDT) at the Sheraton Centre Toronto.

The event will include a Fireside Chat and Q&A with Taya Cook, Director of Development at Urban Capital and Sherry Larjani, Managing Partner at Spotlight Developments who joined forces to conceptualize Reina, a mid-rise boutique condominium project designed and developed by women, but built for everyone.

Together, Cook and Larjani assembled a team of female experts from a range of industries including but not limited to construction management, architecture, engineering (including structural, mechanical and electrical), legal, marketing and sales. Every aspect of Reina has been run by a woman in a leadership role with the goal of drawing awareness to the significant gender imbalance that exists in real estate development and providing role models to encourage more women to enter these fields.

Cook and Larjani will share how their combined passions helped to conceptualize the project, the processes and challenges that they faced (and continue to face), all while balancing life, family and work.

About the Panelists:

Taya Cook
Director of Development, Urban Capital

As the first employee hired at Urban Capital 18 year ago, Taya has had the unique experience to grow with a company that has become one of Canada’s top residential developers.

As the company’s Director of Development, Taya has spent her career surrounded by mostly great men….and noticeably few women. So, when an article came out listing the top developers in Toronto, and all 20 of them were men, she felt compelled to react. In 2019, she, along with partner Sherry Larjani from Spotlight Development, announced Reina, the first project designed and developed by an all-star team of women, with the goal of creating a platform to showcase women in development and to encourage others to enter the field.

With extensive interviews for the New York Times, Oprah Magazine and many others, Taya is a strong supporter of women in senior positions and has a keen interest to shake up the industry’s status quo.

Sherry Larjani
Managing Partner, Spotlight Developments

Sherry Larjani is an experienced real estate developer and entrepreneur, with a focus on creating beautifully designed spaces that bring her visions to life.

Sherry began her career working as a designer at a luxury architecture firm in Toronto and quickly progressed into building new single-home builds and renovation jobs. In 2010, Sherry created Spotlight Developments, specializing in the acquisition of properties for redevelopment into high density residential, commercial, and mixed-use projects. An advocate for collaboration, she champions inclusivity and teamwork as a foundation for a successful approach towards real estate development. In 2019, Sherry partnered with Urban Capital to create Reina, a project with Canada's first all-female development team to raise awareness of gender inequality in the industry and the many roles’ women can play.
