Associateship in Canadian Surety Bonding

Program History

In May 1996 in response to numerous inquiries, the Surety Association of Canada sent out a questionnaire to its membership regarding their education and training requirements. Response was overwhelmingly in favour of a SAC sponsored education/designation program with 93% of respondents indicating there is a definite need for such a program. In addition, 87% of respondents indicated that they would enroll at lease one staff member in the program.

In September 1996 the Education and Research Committee began work on the development of the program. Committee members reviewed material and drew up program and course outlines.

In February 1997, the committee along with the President of the Association met with the School of Continuing Studies at the University of Toronto to explore a joint sponsorship of such a program with SAC developing the program material and U of T handing its distribution.

The objective of the Surety Association of Canada in establishing the Associateship program in surety bonding is to provide our membership and the industry with a vehicle for training its staff. While students from other areas are welcome to take any of the courses offered, the program and course material is geared toward the student who will be pursuing a career in the surety industry.

The program aims to provide students with an in-depth practical and theoretical understanding of the practice of suretyship. The academic standard of the program will be demanding and success will require a great deal of discipline and hard work on the part of the student. In short, we seek to provide our member companies with value for the money invested in the training and development of staff.
